The Hourglass

"The past is a place of reference, not a place of residence." — Willie Nelson

The Hourglass reminds you that time flows in one direction. Moments, relationships, and phases of life pass through its narrow neck, never to return in the same form. What has ended cannot be rewound, and attempts to reclaim the past often yield only shadows of what once was.

Loss is inevitable. Some departures are gifts in disguise, clearing space for growth, new connections, and deeper understanding. The Hourglass teaches that clinging to what has slipped away traps the soul in grief rather than guiding it toward renewal.

Do not return to that which is finished. Do not attempt to rekindle flames that have burned out; the light will never be identical, and the heart may not withstand the illusion. Instead, honour what was, carry the lessons, and allow the sands of time to shape wisdom and resilience.

The Hourglass is both warning and guide: endings are sacred. They teach acceptance, patience, and the courage to move forward. In letting go, the soul finds clarity, space, and the freedom to embrace what is yet to come.

  • What is something you have been holding onto that the Hourglass is telling you to release?
  • Think of a relationship or phase of life that you tried to "rekindle." What was the outcome, and what did it teach you about endings?
  • How can you honour what was lost without being trapped by the memory of it?
